All together, these bodies working together consist one of the world's largest environmental initiatives in nature protection, restoration and conservation. While on its own, the UNDP works in many areas of global welfare some of which include; Poverty Reduction, Crisis Prevention and Recovery and of course Energy and Environment. GEF plays a role
particularly in international cooperation and in the financing of environmental
projects. Together UNDP-GEF form a team through which UNDP is mainly
responsible for the implementation of projects that are funded by GEF.
They work extensively with other organizations including NGOs, academic
institutions and private sector entities to name a few. These are also the roles that this team plays in the Danube Regional Project, which was launched December 1st, 2001. It is one of the world's largest environmental projects and it covers the entire Danube Basin. This project is active at many levels of the protections, conservation and restoration of the Danube River Basin, as it is of international importance. UNDP/GEF would not be able to support such a project by itself, which is why there are several other project partners also involved. Its central partnership is with the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), and it works closely with the governments, businesses and industries, NGOs and communities of the 13 Danube countries. Together, they hope to create a healthier and more beautiful environment for all people and living things in this region. The DRP's NGO Support Programme is managed by the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe on behalf of the UNDP/GEF Danube Regional Project (www.drp.org). The REC is a non-profit,
non-partisan and non-advocacy organisation committed to aiding organizations
in their quest for improving, protecting and conserving our environment
and the nature within it. REC supports communication among different
non-governmental organizations working in the environmental domain,
and also communication between such NGOs and the public.
