Targets
Why these 3 Rivers?
The three
target rivers of this project are tributaries of the Danube River. While
they display certain variations and differences from each other with
relation to their surrounding landscapes, however, all three rivers
represent the same vital importance to local people as well as to local
animals and plants. They provide a livelihood and an important source
of water. Their floodplains are managed and utilised in a similar way
and therefore all three catchments also deal with similar water pollution
problems.
All three
rivers are suffering especially from agricultural, industrial and municipal
activities for which humans are directly responsible. As a result, living
conditions for both humans and nature deteriorate with the declining
quality of local water. The greatest problem lies in the fact that,
in the regions of these rivers, no proper infrastructure is in place
to treat the products discharged into river lifelines. Additionally
there is generally low public awareness on the issue of poor water quality
and of its consequences on nature and human health. Local and regional
authorities in each river basin do not see the reduction of pollution
as their priority, since local people do not request it.
We use the water we pollute! The Morava, Mura and
Ogosta Rivers are no exception. Once they become over-polluted, that
means we will have cut our own lifeline. "Water is life"
